Coaching Frequently Asked Questions
01
How many practices a week do I have to coach?
Typically teams do 2 practices a week of 45-60min each. Teams are permitted to have more or less practices as they see fit and agreed upon by parents.
02
How long is the season?
A typical season is 8-9 weeks long. If there is a Holiday weekend during the season there will typically not be any games that weekend.
03
Do I have to buy my own coaching gear?
If Volunteer coaches do not have gear of their own or do not wish to purchase their own hear, the club can provide gear such as balls, cones, and pinnies. We do ask that borrowed gear is returned at the end of the season so it may be used to help out other coaches in the future.
04
Can I have an assistant coach?
Yes, each team is allowed an assistant coach. Assistant coaches must also have a background check performed. You cannot coach on the sidelines with the team unless you have completed a coaches background check. This is to ensure the safety of all our players.
05
Do I need to have a coaching license?
No, Kelso Soccer Club is a recreation club. Parents and community members with coaching experience and licenses are a great benefit to the club and the players, but are not required.
06
Do we have to travel for games?
Yes, but not far. All games are hosted within Cowlitz County. Travel could include games as far as Kalama and Castle Rock.
07
Do I have to make my own coaching plans for practices?
Coaches are welcome to make their own coaching plans and games; however, Kelso Soccer club offers a variety of tools and resource to assist coaches. See Coaching resources above on this page.
08
How do I prepare for a game?
Prior to the game, if you play on a kelso soccer field, coaches need to check the field and ensure the lines are painted and clear. For full size fields coaches will need to place corner flags and replace them after the game. Flags and paint can be found in the equipment shed at each Kelso field.Coaches should also bring:
-
Player/team roster
-
Player Medical Waivers
-
First aid kit (recommended but not required)
-
Bring a whistle. The club tries to arrange for youth referees, but sometimes coaches or parents are needed to referee if a referee is not available
-
Team snacks are always a great idea and can be split up amongst parents!
